Digital camera Review: An excellent device for creating backups. WDH1U10000N
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using two of these devices at work to perform weekly backups on about fifteen Linux (Intel) computers for nearly four months. I first had to reformat them to a ext3 Linux file system. After that, literally, plug and play for our Red Hat boxes. I cannot speak for the speed, with most backups, who cares how fast, if they are completed without errors and the backup device is reliable. What impressed me was / is the durability of these things. I have connected and disconnected this drive many times (500+?) to computers that were powered up with no problems. The connectors seem rugged, often I need (in a hurry) to carry the drive around with the power adapter dangling (not recommended). The backups we do, verify the checksum after a backup and so far have shown zero (0) errors. I ordered one of these today so that I could use it at my home to back up my two Win-XP machines and my one XP/Linux notebook computer. I gave the 'Software' rating five stars only because no software is needed. :) This device may not be sleek or cool but it is reliable and feels like a good book in your hands. I do have five years experience with other WD external backup devices and have never had any bad feelings with WD.

Digital camera Review: Another disappointed customer
Summary: 2 Stars

Like many on this forum, I am disappointed with the 500gig My Book because it died after 14 months, and the warranty lasts only 12. Turned on the computer one day, heard a hard clicking sound and - poof! it was dead. And to make things even more disconcerting, this is the second WD drive I have had fail on me within a few months. One of the two WD 500 gb drives in the RAID array inside my main PC died as well about a month prior. (Thank God I was smart enough to have purchased a RAID array on my main PC or I would have lost everything.) I have a strong feeling that the WD 500 gig models were not built well. (Don't know about the 1TB models.)

Also, as others have noted, besides the 12 month warranty there is no separate on/off switch which makes it harder to turn off the drive. (The blue botton in the middle did not work reliably for me.) My new drive is an Iomega 1TB model that has this feature. Hopefully, by powering off when I am not backing up, it will extend the life of the drive.

Because the My Book was intended for use strictly as a backup device, there was no data permanently lost. But I strongly recommend not buying a My Book or any other single drive solution to hold precious photos, quicken files etc. Only use it as a back up device. If you need to add additional storage that will hold precious data, do yourself a big favor and buy a home office NAS device like the one from NetGear or Cisco - and make sure you have 2 drives in the device. (Many come with 1 and you have to buy the second one.) Yes, it will set you back $400 or more dollars but that is nothing compared to the tragedy of losing irreplaceable photos, videos, music etc. As an IT professional, I can tell you that hard drives are the most fragile part of the PC and can die at any time without warning. That is why all important servers in a business environment use RAID (multiple hard disks) to ensure redundancy. Do the same for your home PC.

Digital camera Review: As Advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

Everything is as advertised. Plug it in and it works. No hassle. Case is a little larger than some. For me this is a plus because I can set it upright without a stand. This drive is rock solid stable sitting upright. Most bases rarely work well and are usually at least 3X the width of the drive. I always seem to misplace the base as I move the drive from one place to another and then I am stuck using the drive in the horizontal format. Never a concern with this drive. In the uprighr format, it takes up very little desk space. Actually, less space than other "slimmer" drives I own when used with their required base. Makes no noise at all. Nothing complicated about this device. It just does it's job as advertised by the manufacturer and Amazon. I have used numerous external hard drives, including firewire devices, and this one is faster than any drive I have ever used. Will definetly purchase same or similar product from WD if I ever need another external hard drive.

Digital camera Review: As Expected
Summary: 5 Stars

Just as the title suggests, this external hard drive is just as expected. I never planned to use it to increase my computers running speed, I just needed a place to store files like pictures and movies that I won't be looking at frequently. I've had it for over a month now and still no problems. The only hinderance is that it has to be plugged into the wall at all times (When in use). I knew that while purchasing it however, so there is no misleading fault of the seller.

A very good hard drive, and very inexpensive. I would highly recommend this to anyone who simply needs a place to store files.

I have tried to extend my storage capacity by buying a mobo with IDE and SATA RAID. This was an ok solution and I had 6 HDDs working for a total of 1.3TBs (200GBX5+320GB), my PC was cluttered with cables and 2 HDDs failed in the first 6 months.

MyBook is the better solution since u dont need to strain ur PC, plus its portable and even goes to standby after few minutes of unuse.

Its also a scalable solution , I have gotten 2X 1TB and I can pick up a new one whenever i run out of space. It dosnt take much space on my desktop and looks cool.
