Digital camera reviews of Western Digital 640 GB Caviar Black SATA 3 Gb/s 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD6401AALS

Digital camera Review: Packaging SUX but WD support was very good
Summary: 3 Stars

When i first got this item i was shocked at the packaging so i submitted photos here... whoever is not supervising these drives being sent out should be fired... read the ongoing comments... and it is also not just this drive, it is across the board from Amazon (Western Digital)... when i called WD direct they were very helpful and understanding... all worked fine from WD but the Amazon originated shipping was a joke by ANY standard... sooo... beware of the shipping... BTW the drive was damaged but did not show up till after the 30 day Amazon return policy expired... Amazon did not want anything to do with it... so i just warn all look at the photos and you make the call...

otherwise the drive is excellent... it's a Western Digital Black Baby!

sorry Amazon, but you need to fix what is obviously broken... please fix and stop wasting everyones time with returns and RMA's...

namaste

BTW the three star rating is balanced out... Amazon= 1 Star and Western Digital gets 5 Stars

Digital camera Review: Packaging issue resolved
Summary: 5 Stars

Each OEM drive was in its own box with molded plastic at each end of the drive to hold it in place. I bought two drives which were then packaged in a larger box with plenty of air peanuts.

I am running the drives in RAID 0 configuration. They are very fast and quiet. I can barely hear them.

As usual Amazon shipping was fast!!!

Digital camera Review: Probablly the fastest single drive solution to date, within reasonable prices
Summary: 5 Stars

You want speed and free space? Here you go.
Reviews/benchmarks across the net show that this is one of the fastest single drive, non-SSD solutions there is, without paying for overpriced hard drives. Sure, you can get a 300GB Velociraptor, but you'll end up paying 4x as much, and an improvement of perhaps 1.5x times more.
Running HDTach, this drive gets 90-95 MB/s read and write, with a burst speed of 120MB/s. Using an AMD SB750-based system.
For something more "concrete", that's 5.9 in Vista Experience, and 6.4 in Windows 7.
On the downside, yes, it's on the loud side, but it's either sick speeds or extreme silence. I went for the speed route.

Digital camera Review: Quiet & Fast!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this hard drive for about a month now and it's working just fine. It's much quieter and faster than my 500GB Western Digital Cavier Blue. Never had any problem with a Western Digital drive. Happy with this purchase from Amazon.com.

Digital camera Review: Simply Outstanding
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a Great HDD.

Pros:

>Nice looking
>Very Fast
>Easy to install (well depends on your case)
>good packaging
> Installed Win 7 in less than 15 min.

Cons

>None Really

I was skeptical on the performance of these drives. I've used Velociraptors in the past, and those perform really well but are pricey. Also compared to SSD's 10k + drives are now practically obsolete. So i made a decision and decided to go with these instead of the SSD, and I'm not disappointed.

On tests (HD-Tune) these drives perform nearly as well as Velociraptors. But in real life the difference is barley noticeable. You could package these as Velociraptors and no-one would know the difference.

I am very impressed with WD's Caviar Black series.
Why pay doubled the amount for 1/4 of the storage on an SSD? And if you go raid 0, you will get the SSD speeds with alot of storage.

Also, I would recommend after you get settled (install os, programs, transfer files, etc) that you run a disk defrag and optimizer. ( i use Auslogics DiskDefrag) It will increase the speed of your device considerably, and i would run it at least once a month to keep your drive running at optimum speeds!
