Digital camera reviews of Western Digital My Book Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Digital camera Review: 150 dollars for a hard drive, 1500 to retrieve data when it fails, dispaointment over losing all family pictures, PRICELESS
Summary: 1 Stars

Western Digital's external hard drive has not been kind to me. Trying to get a hold of someome to talk to for help was not even possible. Going to techy shops I found out that WD is known for corrupting data and not working. If I had known that, I would have bought two. One for back up and one for backing up my back up. Buyer beware, do not use this for anything that is important without an extra backup.
I wish I could give this a negative five star rating. If the pictures and music I have are retrievable, it will cost me $1500.00. I'm so bummed about losing all my memories... maybe some day the cost will come down?

Digital camera Review: 3 months young: a premature death
Summary: 1 Stars

My 3 month olds unit just died w/o warning.I used to read the comments here from the angy people with this failed drives with certain disdains. The unlucky fools. Now it's my turn.

The next few days life will be hell for me trying to retrieve the lost data.

Digital camera Review: 3 strikes WD is out
Summary: 1 Stars

my first one died after a few months with all my information on it. it was still under warranty so they exchanged with me for another, which was also broken. so i called them and they exchanged with me again for another one, which was SURPRISE also broken.

play it safe and spend your money elsewhere. for something you should be able to "put your life on", it is not worth the risk, time, and headache.

Digital camera Review: 500 = 465?
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this unit and installed it on my windows xp system to find that the drive only shows 465gb rather than the advertised 500. It may be my mistake or my NTFS, but this seems a bit like false advertising either way.

Digital camera Review: A good drive for basic backup needs
Summary: 4 Stars

I use Apple's Time Machine with my MacBook Pro and find this drive to work just fine for that application. Upon first connection, Time Machine will reformat the drive to suit its needs. Otherwise, installation was seamless, simple, and the drive is working just fine since then. If you don't need Firewire support, then don't pay for it. This drive has a single USB 2.0 connection, and that's all I needed. So far, so good.
