Digital camera Review: Doesn't hold up for long

The good - Very quiet, stays cool, set up was quick & easy, nice size
The bad - It failed about two months after the warranty expired.
My advice - If you want this, and can get some kind of extended warranty, do so (I did not). Make sure you have a second backup drive (which I do) so you don't lose everything if your drive quits on you!
I only used this as storage for files, kept it at work (I keep my primary backup drive at home), and brought it home monthly to re-backup my files. Maybe if I never moved it, it would have lasted longer.

The drive failed after little more than a year with no advance warning of any kind. After researching on Internet I discovered this was not uncommon. Rather than spending a lot of $$ to recover the data via a data recovery firm, I took the advice of some folks and opened the unit myself (CAUTION: this voids the warranty) and took steps to recover the data. Luckily those steps were ultimately successful. If you buy one of these drives, be sure you have a second copy of the data on another device (I had most but not all -- now I am fully redundant (smile)), so you will be able to take advantage of the warranty (i.e., ship back for a replacement) and not have to sacrifice the data or be out any dollars for data recovery.Digital camera Review: Drive is Sub-Par

I purchased this drive in January, 2007 and it recently crashed. I expect an external hard drive to last at least two years. My 3 Maxtor drives have lasted longer than that, and this one last a bit more than a year and a half. THIS IS MY SECOND WD MY BOOK 500GB I'M STORING PHOTOS AND MOVIES THAT ARE NOT REPLACEABLE SO I NEED THE BEST EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE I CAN FIND AND THE PRICE WAS THE BEST AT THIS TIME.
