Digital camera reviews of Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1U5000

Digital camera Review: Crashes galore.
Summary: 1 Stars

The first thing that happened when I plugged the USB only version of My Book into my computer was a hard crash. Meaning that I had to shut down the computer and reboot. Every time I tried to boot the computer with the drive plugged in, the computer would crash. When I booted, then turned on the drive, sometimes it would come up and sometimes it wouldn't. Once up, I had to format it to get the larger file sizes (You'd think with a drive this big, it would be understood that the user has large files). Not a problem, but why?

Transfering files was painfully slow. It took about 24 hours to transfer about 70GB. When I realized that I was going from one external drive to another, I made sure to go from an internal drive from that point on. However, it still took overnight to transfer about 30 GB. My USB port, might be 1.1, however, accounting for the slow speed, but the crashes were ridiculous and I was happy just to get the data back onto my internal drive.

I already owned 2 Maxtor One Touch drives, so I returned the My Book and paid the extra money for another Maxtor and as with the other two, I plugged it in and it worked immediately and flawlessly. Voila. I should have just done the (firewire) Maxtor in the first place, but I was trying to save a little money.

Digital camera Review: Croaked in less than a year
Summary: 2 Stars

When it works, it works great. Mine ran continuously for about 10 months. Then one day it made that "click-of-death" sound, and that was the end of it.

Digital camera Review: DO NOT BUY THIS!!
Summary: 2 Stars

We loved it for the first few months...though at times it had difficulty being recognized or powering up when the computer was restarted. Before 11 months went by it died...the click of death (as another reviewer put it) is exactly right. And it comes on suddenly. Yesterday it was fine, today it's dead. We lost 500GB of information (we were only able to back up half of what was on it before it died). We thought we'd at least have time to burn DVDs of everything and store the device as backup, turns out IT is the replaceable piece of hardware. Too expensive to be that so my suggestion is to just not buy one. My Seagate on the other hand is still trucking after 2 and a half years.

Digital camera Review: DO NOT BUY. PURCHASE OR LOOK AT!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Like many 1 star purchasers, I purchased this hard drive in hopes of it lasting at least a few years. It didn't make it past one. And this is really hard to believe because I didn't really use it all that much. I just backed up files. Well...one day to my dismay, it just stopped working. I've had problems with hard drives not working, so I took it out of its case, put it in another case and hoped for the best. It still didn't work. Of course by then, the warranty expired. Some of the files on it was irreplaceable. So, I went to see how much it would cost for data recovery. I would have to take out a second mortgage just to have that done. I didn't realize that these hard drives were meant to frustrate people and have them lose their precious memories/files.

I also have a nephew who had one that did the same thing - which doesn't surprise me. This is a terrible product. I will recommend it to zero people. I wish I could put zero stars on this...

I have a Maxtor that I've had for 10 years and it still works. This one not one year... As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I got junk. Thanks Western Digital...you suck
