Digital camera Review: A "must have" device for HD DVRs
Summary: 5 Stars

This Western Digital external hard drive is recommended by TIVO and worked seamlessly with my Series 3 HD TIVO in minutes. Set up is a breeze. TIVO recorded for nearly two weeks filling up the system with suggestions. If you have an HD TV and HD service you must get the expanded memory. No worries about what to record, what to save or what to watch. It was cheaper to buy it from Beach Camera, than from TIVO direct.

Digital camera Review: A Must For HD Tivo
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this. Hasn't let me down. A little hard to install as my Tivo crashed a couple times when I hooked it up following the directions. Ever since I got it running it has been great! Wouldn't buy a Tivo without it.

Digital camera Review: A Welcome Addition to TiVo HD
Summary: 5 Stars

The Western Digital My DVR Expander is truly "Plug-N-Play"!! In fact, I was able to have this item shipped to a friend who is hosting my TiVo HD which I view over Slingbox. My friend plugged in the expander and with a quick configuration change and a TiVo reboot, my storage space was effortlessly upgraded. Not much more to say. One of the more simple devices to add.

Digital camera Review: A message for Charter Communications customers -- DON'T LISTEN TO CHARTER!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the Charter Comm provided, rented, DVR from Scientific Atlanta the Explorer 8300HD for about 2+ years. I have been unhappy with it for just about that long. I don't know what the size of its hard disk is, but it is miniscule!! I had 25 saved programs -- some HD, some not, most movies, some not -- and the disk usage was always warning me of low disk space.

I called Charter about six months ago and asked what external disk I could plug in to solve the problem. A Charter so-called "tech" informed me that there were NO external disks that would work with my DVR. According to the dolt I spoke with they had another DVR by a different manufacturer that was upgradable but "that's not available in your zip code". I had accepted that clap trap as "gospel".

Then Amazon sent me a promo e-mail for this "My DVR Expander". It said that it had been tested with the specific DVR model number from SciAtl. Was I perplexed? You bet I was. But I dared to trust Amazon and it "WORKS"!!

Don't listen to Charter techs; they don't know what they are talking about. Not one iota!!!
My DVR was "full" and issuing dire warnings that it could not record anything else just two days ago. When I plugged in the 1 Terabyte model of the MDVREX, the usage dropped to less than 10%!! After two or three days of 24/7 recording I'm only at 20%!!

BUY the device!! It makes your DVR from Charter worth the monthly rental. What Charter, wanting to sell is its services. It wants folk to depend on "on demand" which doesn't always work and often has what I call a "bunch of crap" as programing.

I think that is what Charter does not inform folk of the ease of this upgrade. Having this device makes having my DVR a personal "on demand" service that only has a multitude of choices that I'm interested in and only has better quality and reliability than Charter's so-called "on demand" service.

I genuinely believe that is why the company is conspiring to keep you from knowing what you can do with $[...] bucks that doesn't go into THEIR pockets.

DEFINITELY BUY ONE OF THESE!! You will NOT go wrong!! Assuming you want to watch a rerun of Law and Order that you have not seen previously on your own schedule. A 1 Terabyte Disk takes time to fill up even with HD quality programming. As I said, I am now only at 20%. I can have six x six hours of Judge Judy/Mathias and Penney etc. etc. over a week stored for future boredom or sick days.

This device frees me from both the on-air and cable broadcast schedules.

Digital camera Review: A much needed boost to TIvo's capacity
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought the expander when the price dropped from $169 to $129. I've had this device about 3 months now, and the only problem I've had was with getting Tivo to recognize the device initially. Since then, it has been smooth sailing without the worry of deleted shows. The expander is intended to be stored upright and has an amber light on the front. It's pretty quiet, but like the Tivo itself is audible in a quite room and runs 24/7. Also, it is intended to be permanently connected, as shows span the internal and external drive (or so the manual says). You can of course temporarily disconnect it to move things around, power down, etc., but permanently doing so can result in lost shows.

Connection was simple, but I couldn't get Tivo to recognize it at first. The manual said to follow the on-screen directions after Tivo was restarted, but there weren't any, and as far as I could tell Tivo didn't know about the drive. After reconnecting, several reboots (Tivo takes forever to restart! We're talking 15-20 minutes!), and a couple of Tivo crashes, the device was recognized. I don't know if the problem was due to Tivo or the expander, but I'm guessing it was a Tivo software issue (some reviewers have taken issue with the eSATA cable though).

Now that it's working and functioning as intended I'm happy enough.
