Digital camera reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 1 TB eSATA External Hard DriveDigital camera Review: Better deal from Amazon than via Tivo for me Summary: 5 Stars
This drive installs easily on your Tivo if you follow the simple instructions, working flawlessly on my Tivo HD model. I love the fact I can't hear it running, plus it stays cool. I have run it for 3 months without any issues. The price at Amazon beats Tivo's price if you already own the Tivo and are buying it on its own.
Digital camera Review: Better to buy this from Tivo Summary: 2 Stars
Do NOT buy this product from The Price Pros. I bought it thinking that it worked great, but they sold me an unsupported model number (and they still put the "Tivo verified" sticker on it). It worked fine for a few months and then it started killing the Tivo. 3 dead Tivo's later, Tivo support figured out that it was the bad drive killing my machines (yes I had to pay for new machines and yes I had to reprogram all my season passes 4 times). I tried to get a refund from The Price Pros for being sold a falsely advertised product. After giving me the run around, they ultimately refused since it was beyond 30 days. They could have at least sent me a replacement drive (assuming that model was supported by Tivo). Bottom line- don't be lured by the lower price. Be sure you are getting a supported and working drive by buying this from Tivo themselves.
Digital camera Review: Beware! Causes Video/Audio stuttering for Scientific Atlanta DVRs Summary: 1 Stars
As other reviewers have already noted, when you connect the device all seems well until you start to notice audio/video stuttering that can occur as infrequently as once every 15-20 min to about once every 20 seconds (unwatchable). This occurs whether you are recording something or not. For example, if you're watching live TV, it can occur. This made me think it was a cable issue. After a few calls to Cox Cable and a technician visit, it was concluded the stuttering was caused by old Coax cable in my house. However, after some further troubleshooting on my own, I could see the Signal To Noise ratio was actually OK (36db). Finally, I unplugged the WD external drive and voila! video and audio began flowing smoothly again. The issue seems to be intermittent but it's something to be aware of if you're thinking about purchasing this drive.
I've rebooted both devices (just powered down, unconnected and reconnected all cables, said a prayer) and am hoping the stuttering will stop. It seems to be OK now, and I'll test for another day. If it continues to happen I'll end up returning this device. Too bad, I liked having the extra storage.
Digital camera Review: Buy an eSATA cable too! Summary: 3 Stars
Hooked it up to my TIVO, which promptly went into a reboot loop when I turned it back on. Not good. Thanks to Google, I found out that many other people had the same problem. The solution: get a new eSATA cable to replace the crap one included with this device. Did that, and now it's working fine. Love having 1TB of storage; now TIVO never deletes anything until I do!
Digital camera Review: Buy the SIIG Cable! Summary: 4 Stars
I use this with my TiVo HD and it works perfectly (after I used the SIIG cable). Do yourself a favor buy the SIIG cable with your order. As many others have found out, the cable that comes with this thing is worthless. My TiVo would continually reboot/reset on it's own until I replaced the cable. I would get anywhere between 1 hour to 24 hours in between failures, but then it would start rebooting over and over until I powered everything down, pulled the cable and re-inserted it, and the powered everything back up. Since I replaced the cable, the TiVo has not rebooted once!
Otherwise this thing is great, you don't hear it at all.
