In the end, did not work with a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD Time-Warner cable box.
Took multiple installs to get the 8200HD to recognize it and format the WD 1 TB My DVR Expander.
Then the 8300HD would intermittently bring up the "external HD recognized" notice and then the DVR playback menu would intermittently freeze. Rebooting the cable box and reinstalling the expander worked once.
Second time, the cable box would not recognize the expander on reboot and all recorded shows were lost.
Of course this was one day after the end of Amazon's 30-day return period. I'm stuck with this junk. It will make a great 500 yard target for my .50 Barrett.
When it was working the pixelation and sound distortion was awful.

I apologize for the issue you're having with your Western Digital product. The Scientific Atlanta 8330HD is only compatible with the 500GB model of the DVR expander. I recommend returning the drive to your place of purchase and exchanging it for a 500GB model or another product that would suit your needs.

Just a heads up that yes, the drive is great, but the cable is still terrible even after all these months of people alerting WD to that fact.
So, DO buy the drive, BUT DO BUY ANOTHER CABLE. After initial install my drive was fine for about a day, then started having playback stutters and 30 second delays between menu pages. Replaced the eSATA cable and everything was great.
Thank you to the previous posters who saved me a ton of troubleshooting and frustration.
