Digital camera reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveDigital camera Review: As easy as pie to set up Summary: 5 Stars
Just hook up as directed in the included instructions and follow the on-screen directions. Up and running in no time. I now have the capability of storing 93 hours of HD programming or over 800 hours in SD on my Tivo HD DVR.
Digital camera Review: BEWARE: Do NOT Buy Expander Now Summary: 5 Stars
Beware that digital rights management by TIVO is implemented by splitting each recording between the TIVO DVR and the Expander shown here. Once hooked up the two devices can not be divorced without losing all you programs on both the TIVO and the Expander.
If you are like my wife you will loose a lot of movies stored for later viewing. Wait for HDD or when your TIVO drive is filled up before committing. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE YOUR EXPANDER BEFORE YOUR TIVO GOES, if you value your recordings. The average life of one of these HD expanders is 3-5 years or, if you have a defective one like mine, less than 2.
Digital camera Review: Beware Motorla Users on Cox Summary: 4 Stars
THe product seemed to be great. I ordered it after a Cox support rep told me the HD DVR by Motorola would support it but it does not and it screwed up my box so bad that Cox came to replace it luckily at no charge
Digital camera Review: Beware SA 8300 Series Compatibility Summary: 2 Stars
The manufacturer information is misleading at best. This unit is NOT compatible with the SA 8300 HDC (which happens to be the only version currently used by Time-Warner at least in my city). The HDC has the plug-in (rather than motherboard built-in) cable card.
Fortunately I was able to swap my HDC for my wife's legacy 8300HD (built in cable decoder) and the WD drive works fine - great to have the extra capacity.
But check out which 8300 model your cable company uses to be sure you don't have an SA 8300HDC!
Digital camera Review: Bigger is better! Summary: 5 Stars
We have the Scientific Atlantic HD8300 DVR through Cablevision. When recording in HD, it holds a measely 20 hours of recording. Not much when you have a family of four recording things right and left! To keep peace in the kingdom, I gave this DVR Expander to my husband for his birthday, which added an addtional 60 hours of HD recording time! Yeah! Follow the instructions and set up is no problem. It works seemlessly with the DVR and all functions on the remote work just fine. Prior to purchasing, I did contact Western Digital because I had concerns about power outages. Many reviews and the instructions state that the Expander must remain powered at all times and that not doing so could risk losing recorded programs. We live in the north east and are subject to storm related power outages. The tech support person said that so long as the DVR and the Expander are powering back up at the same time, there should not be an issue and you should not lose any recordings. We'll see. Haven't encountered that problem yet. The drive does get a bit warm, so make sure all vents are in open air. Now if the price would just come down like regular hard drives...
