Digital camera Review: Easiest part of buying a Tivo, more storage

The only thing Tivo's done right (besides allowing you to share your media with your networked computers) is additional storage via eSATA external harddrives.
My Wireless G USB Tivo adapter didn't work without a software upgrade to my Tivo DVR (it came with software that was 2 years out of date). My Tivo DVR had out of date software, the cable card you are required to get to make it work is not compatible with ONDEMAND, and it costs about 200x as much as just renting a Comcast DVR.
If not for the ability to add the additional storage and export media to my computer, my Tivo DVR would have been a complete rip off. As it is, I still feel cheated.
But hey, at least the 500 GB storage adapter by Western Digital is easy, inexpensive, and doubles the capacity of my Tivo DVR.

I purchased this product because my HD-Tivo only had about 20 hours
of recording space. With the recent Olympics and my regular programs,
I couldn't watch them all before they were getting deleted. This
recommended DVR Expander was very easy to install. Just 2 plugs
and a quick auto-configuring by the Tivo unit and it was ready to
go in about 20 minutes. Now I have an 80 hour HD video bank.

Installation and set-up could not have been easier. By following the included directions I was able to complete both installation and set-up in a matter of minutes. Before installation my HD Digital Cable Box indicated 31% full, afterwards only 5% full. While the WDG1S500VN is priced higher than similar SATA drives (even those with greater capacity), I feel it is worth the extra money to receive assured compatibility with my HD Digital Cable Box.Digital camera Review: Easy install, but limited life expectancy

Like the other 40+ reviewers, this was a breeze to install with my TiVo Series III HD. That was 18 months ago, and it's worked perfectly until today. I ran the Kickstart 54 SMART diagnostics, and the external drive has failed. A ton of stored stuff is gone forever (although I may try the trick of freezing the drive and transferring to my PC). 18 months is way too short for the life of an HD drive.
