Digital camera reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveDigital camera Review: Easy setup compared to building my own! Summary: 5 Stars
I have COX cable in Phoenix, AZ and I'm using the COX 8240HDC DVR and the DVR expander works fine. I estimate that it increased my capacity from 30 hours of High Def to 120 hours (4 times more).
Because this drive is only 500Gigs, I tried building my own DVR expander by buying an eSATA cable and a Western Digital 1TB drive from Costco but I just couldn't get it to work with my COX DVR.
Save yourself the hassle and frustration and get this DVR expander drive!
3-1-2010 update: The unit died just a little over a year old.
Digital camera Review: Easy to Set Up Summary: 5 Stars
In a day of more and more complications with electronics I love my TiVo for it's ease of use and simplicity to set up. This DVR extender is amazingly simple to get going. Plug in the power, attach a cord to the TiVo and your done! It rocks!
Digital camera Review: Easy to connect and use Summary: 5 Stars
Had no problem connecting this to my TV and expanding my capacity to 85 Hours HD and over 800 hours SD. My new TiVo required a software upgrade but that was also easy.
Digital camera Review: Easy to install but failed just 1 week after warranty expired Summary: 1 Stars
This was very easy to install. But just my luck, in exactly 1 year and 1 week, it failed. Just 1 week after my warranty expired. I ran TiVo series 3 HD diagnostics (kickstart 54) to verify that it was the expander and not the TiVo. I lost all of my recordings. Apparently, this has happened to other customers. My next expander definitely won't be from Western Digital.
Digital camera Review: Easy to install works great Summary: 4 Stars
Well to start off, I have had this a little over a month but it works flawlessly and was a breeze to install. I have many usb and even a few sata external HDs over the years. Almost all have a noise and or a longevity problem being always on, usually due to a cheap fan or poor cooling. This unit seems very well built and is noiseless comapred to other media units.
Installation was a breeze, just follow the enclosed instructions and it will just work. My first cable card installed ok, but this was 10x easier and no stress.
It is a bit pricey and I know there are hacks that can be done to larger and less expensive external and even internal drives. But having gone the cheap route in the past and having to deal with HDs that go bad after a year or so I decided that I would go with a better quality device that was certified for this job and I am glad I did. I took one star off for not having a 1TB option at this time.
