Digital camera reviews of Western Digital Passport Essential Portable 250GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (WDME2500TN)Digital camera Review: Great Hard Drive, crappy color Summary: 5 StarsPortable Hard Drives are - by definition - laptop hard drives encased in a plastic or aluminum housing that are powered by a single USB port.
By that right, the WD My Passport fits the bill. It holds what I want to to hold. There is no audible sound until you put your ear right on top of it and the only vibrations it makes are slight and can only be felt if you put your hand on top of it. Heat never accumulates enough to be noticeable and after an entire hour of moving files there is only a slight warmth to the drive.
Transfer speeds are to be expected of a 5400RPM hard drive. Fast, not as fast as a 3.5" external or a SATA equipped internal, but you should get transferring don in a readily amount if time. Always make time for file transfers.
Build quality is slightly off. The bottom corner has some roughness to it, like the stamping machine cut too sharply. This is the pitfall of non-rounded plastic though, so I expect it. Rubber stamps on the bottom hold the drive in place so it doesn't go flying off if knocked. A USB LED placed next to the connector like will flash when transferring files, and stay lit when idle.
My only gripe is the "Intense Blue" color scheme. Every other color is "Color/White" or "Black/Black". With the intense blue color WD decided to use a "Royal Blue/Baby Blue". Slightly emasculating. Though I've gotten used to it, I was expecting blue and white.
I cannot speak of the included software, because I never used it. I kept it FAT 32 formatted to be compatible with more platforms, and I don;t have big files that require EXT3 or NTFS formatting.
Digital camera Review: Western Digital WDME1600 Portable Hard Drive Summary: 4 StarsProduct needed some set up from their technical support department. Once set up its as easy as copy and paste. Qucik delivery and no issues to speak of, other then needing the original tech support to get it going.

Digital camera Review: Portble HD saves everything Summary: 5 StarsA couple of years ago I bought a big deal laptop with a 60 GB hard drive. Worked fine with cameras of the time that generated 3 MB image files. Then I bought newer cameras that generated 15 MB files- whoa! I started working with Photoshop. It can generate 30 MB files. Layers, you know. Wow! I filled that laptop very quick.
What to do? I bought this portable hard drive. Formatted it right out of the box as other reviewers suggested. It acts just like another drive with a different capital letter (F:). Moved about 20 GB of images out of my computer's HD in about 20 minutes-- Roughly--. Now I have room to work on my laptop, yet keep all of my image files, at the ready. I'm not a computer geek, but I think the image files move on and off this portable hard drive at a similar speed as they move on and off the laptop's internal hard drive. For $125+ or whatever, I have the space to keep on taking photos for a much longer time. I love this portable Hard drive!
Digital camera Review: Great External Drive Summary: 5 StarsI found that western digital external hard drives respond better with both PC and Macs. Some external drives have attitudes and aren't recognized by different makes and models of PC's and Macs. Not the case with "My Passport Essential" usb drive. It's both portable and efficient. I don't travel without it.
