Digital camera reviews of Western Digital Passport Essential Portable 250GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (WDME2500TN)

Digital camera Review: Serves the purpose
Summary: 3 Stars

I got the drive, plugged it in an it worked. Hurray! However, When I tried to copy onto it my first folder, I continuously got an error. I looked up the error in many places, but could not find an answer. Nothing in the manual. Nothing in the KB. So I had to call tech support and waste my free 30 days of support from that first call. The problem...the drive is formatted for FAT when shipped which allows Windows and Mac to use it. You need to reformat it to NTFS in order to have large files copied onto it. You think that the troubleshooting section or instructions might say something, huh? Tech support knew the problem the second that I started to speak - which means that they get many phone calls with this problem. Since then, no more problems. It would be nice if they offered a 7,200 RPM version. I expected it to run a little faster as I decided to use this instead of REV drives for take home backups from the business. The great thing about it is the 320GB which REV won't have for long time yet.

Digital camera Review: Love it, although my Mac has trouble docking it at times
Summary: 4 Stars

The WD Passport Essential is super fast, quiet, and looks great and compact. I bought it in Arctic White. I have a 4 year old iBook G4 with OSX 10.4, so my computer takes a few seconds to recognize it and sometimes it doesn't dock or even ejects it on it's own. I'm sure this is because of my computer, not the Passport, because it has no problem docking on faster Macs and PCs. Yes, it is both PC and Mac compatible/swappable!

I bought the Built External Hard drive Hoodie in black/light blue from the Built NY website. It fits perfectly and is beautifully designed.

Digital camera Review: My Passport
Summary: 4 Stars

Yes, it does fit in my shirt pocket, with my cell phone. It's a small stretch but it does fit. It holds 200+ of my movie files. Great for file transfer. My son said he dropped it on the "carpeted" floor shortly after I bought it and it still works (I don't recommend this). I don't know if you can delete the set-up programs after set up (it would be nice if they told you 300+ MB of extra space). All-in-all I think this is a good product.

Digital camera Review: WD 320 external HDD
Summary: 5 Stars

Very nice, small and quiet (no cooling fans). One small problem was that I had to reformat for use with the Mac (Time Machine). Not difficult to do the reformatting but I had to dig a little to find out why the HD wasn't working with Time Machine. It would have been nice if either 1) the drive was formatted for the Mac, or 2) there was better documentation provided with the drive to explain the reformatting process.

Digital camera Review: extra storage you can carry with you.
Summary: 4 Stars

My hard drive was so full that I couldn't defrag. I didn't have enough space on my thumb drives to move stuff off. The passport drive seemed ideal.

It's easy to install. Simply open the package and plug into your USB port. Then move stuff off to the drive. Simple as that -- no muss, no fuss, and you don't even have to install the software that comes with the drive.

It's about the size of a passport HxW but about 1/2" thick. When traveling I just slip it in a baggie into my purse or luggage. My main PC is my laptop so it just about always travels with me. If you need more storage the passport drive is an excellent option.
