Digital camera Review: .mp4 playback fail

I owned the first generation WD TV HD and despite not rewinding or fast forwarding with any precision, the device played the hundreds of home movies I have converted to .mp4. I bought this device not as a replacement for the original, but to serve the same purpose in another room. The netflix streaming capability was appealing also. It turns out that for my purposes, netflix is the only use. I might as well have bought a Roku, because none of the .mp4 (encoded using Elegato Tubro HD H.246) play on this device. The video plays in fast motion, while the audio plays in real time. While I contacted WD tech support, the process of dealing with them was so tedious and ultimately unsuccessful to be considered pointless. Why on earth does the old model work and the new one not work? Lame. I'm hoping that a firmware update with eventually resolve the problem, but had the device not had netflix streaming, I certainly would have returned it.
