Digital camera reviews of Western Digital WDG1SU5000 My Book Premium ES Edition 500 GB USB/eSATA External Hard DriveDigital camera Review: Works great Summary: 5 Stars
I initially bought a SimpleTech SimpleShare 500Gb drive. Copying the files on the network took forever and on the second day there was some serious knocking which lead to a total crash of the drive. I decided to switch back to a USB HDD . . . the research lead me to this WD MyBook hard drive. It is a very quiet device, great speed, great looking too. I love it.
Digital camera Review: Would have been great if.... Summary: 2 Stars
....my computer would have recognized it. Spent hours trying to get it to work. Reading someone elses review, I now see that I'm not the only one. Something about certain adapter cards not being compatable. Very annoying, wish they said that on the box. Returned it to Bestbuy. Got a LACIE hard drive-much cheaper and worked right away.
Digital camera Review: eSATA on Vista 32-bit Summary: 5 Stars
Worked beautifully. NOTE: you can't install the card, and then connect the drive.
I bought the seperate SIIG card, and SIIG cable. (This drive only comes with a USB 2.0 cable).
You have to have everything installed and connected, then fire up your computer, and it needs to be connected to the internet. Vista downloads and installs the drivers automatically. It works awesome! If you don't have internet access on your box, you can get the driver files from the SIIG website.
SOOOO FAST! Puts FW800 and other interfaces to shame.
(speed only as fast as the slowest drive in your configuration, of course. Example: if you are copying a file from an internal 1.5Gb/s SATA drive to this drive, it is only as fast as the 1.5...)
enjoy
Digital camera Review: gets hot. terribly hot. Summary: 3 Stars
i believe these external cases are some of the worse things you could put a hard drive in. i dismounted the drive from the enclosure and mounted it internally in the pc drivebays. upon checking the smart info there was a registered maximum temperature of 97 degrees celcius. luckily the drive registerd more than 2 years of power-on time with zero relocated sectors or other critical smart info. Good drive I suppose, bad enclosure.
