Just got my WD500GB. I could go with a 320GB drive, but chose this guy mainly because of the USB2 and firewire 800 interfaces: you connect it anywhere with the first, and the second gives speed without competition in its range. WD has began shipping their new Mybooks, where FW800 has been discontinued in favor of eSATA (which tends to be faster and to become standard in the future) but right now these are hard to find, and eSATA is far from being universally established, while the new macbooks already ship with FW800. Since I work with audio and video editing and needed speed right now, and considering an eSATA pci board would cost me half of this drive, I went for this unit.
No regrets whatsoever. It's fast, quiet, stylish and sturdy. Makes my desk look so much better that I even got to organize it. Installation, well, there isn't one, you plug it in and the thing installs its drivers automatically. Its simplicity of use gives you the trust you would expect to have on an external HDD. You could say that its a bit heavy, but even that contributes to the feeling of reliability (probably not just to the feeling, since WD folks know what they've been doing for a long time now).
I didn't test the backup software since my needs are really speed and space, primarily. But even if the enclosed one isn't good, theres a ton over the net for you to choose. Get this unit. Nothing against Maxtor or Seagate, but if theres a drive better than this one, Id like to meet it.
