It worked right out of the box. Mine came with the short cord, and it worked fine for me even though reviews say that the short cord doesn't work for some reason. The only thing you have to know beforehand that the instructions don't really make clear is that the WD Sync software that's included is not what you need to store your files (that's used for synchronizing between computers or something) -- just make a new folder in the new drive, and drag-and-drop them into that folder.Digital camera Review: Awesome and portable
