Digital camera reviews of Western Digital WDXMS1200TN Passport 120 GB USB 2.0 2.5-Inch Portable Hard DriveDigital camera Review: Broke soon after used Summary: 1 Stars
I had this product for only a short amount of time before it completely failed. Now all the files I saved on it are lost forever.
Digital camera Review: Broken right out of the box Summary: 1 Stars
Very disappointing. This hard drive didn't work from the second I took it out of the box. I first plugged it into my Vista OS PC, the computer didn't recognize it. I then tried it with my XP OS PC, but again it didn't recognize. I called customer support and they immediately offered to replace my drive... as if this sort of thing is so common, they didn't even try to trouble shoot. This was a sign that apparently these drives fail all the time! Customer support didn't even blink an eye before offering to replace the drive. It's been a week since I shipped the faulty drive back to WD, but I haven't heard anything from support nor has my new drive arrived. And to add insult to injury, I had to pay the $20 to ship the drive back via certified mail. I'll never purchase a WD drive again.
Digital camera Review: Can't Trust this to Backup My Files Summary: 1 Stars
No one will deny that having dependable backups of important data can be a real lifesaver. So far, the mechanical aspects of my Passport (after about 4 months) seem to be OK. However, after reading some of the other comments below, I do not get a warm fuzzy feeling about mechanical dependability.
This said, my major problem with Passport is the WD Sync software utility that is intended to make it easy for one to make sure all important files are backed up. Unfortunately, this is one buggy piece of software. One big issue is lack of good documentation and instructions on how to use the software. Just try finding them. All you will find is a FAQ with about a dozen items. An even bigger issue is the fact that it will not automatically backup new sub-folders that were created after you configure the backup system. For example, if you configure the sytem to backup all files in your "My Documents" folder, it will only backup folders in existence as of the time when you created the configuration. If you later add a new sub-directory under "My Documents" it will not be automatically included in your new backups. In order to backup your new sub-directory, you must reconfigure your system backup settings in WD Sync. Of course, this is mentioned no-where in the slim documentation and once you have configured WD Sync (a very lengthy process I might add), you are most likely to run backups thinking (rightly so) that all your new sub-directories (and their files) are being backed up. DANGER WILL ROBINSON!
Digital camera Review: Can't beat it with a stick Summary: 5 Stars
Exactly as advertised. No outside power source required, plug and play simplicity, and a decent price. I work in the IT industry, and we like Western Digital hard drives. This USB drive keeps up the standard.
Digital camera Review: Cheap USB cable does not work.. Summary: 1 Stars
While the drive itself appears to be fine, the cheap 28 gauge USB cable that ships with the unit is insufficient to properly power the device. I attached this unit to 3 types of laptops, 2 types of desktops and 2 types of servers and it did not work on any of them. When I replaced the cable with a Y-cable or a lower gauge cable, it works fine. The problem is that the device draws too much power from the USB hub and the cheap cable cannot handle it.
Calls to Western Digital were met with "You can purchase an alternate cable."
That is ridiculous. The unit should ship with a suffiecient cable to power itself.
