Digital camera reviews of Western Digital WDXMS2500TN Passport 250 GB USB Portable Hard Drive

Digital camera Review: LOOK MA, NO POWER CORD!
Summary: 4 Stars

IT'S AN ATTRACTIVE PACKAGE AND IT'S POWERED BY USB!! THAT'S MY FAVORITE FEATURE. IT COMES WITH AUTO BACKUP SOFTWARE BUT I DON'T USE THAT. I DUNNO WHY EVERYTIME I SHUT DOWN MY COMPUTER WITH THIS DEVICE PLUGGED IN, IT SEEMS TO PREVENT IT FROM DOING SO. THAT'S WHY I GAVE IT A 4 NOT 5.

Digital camera Review: Fantastic upgrade for any Intel-based Mac notebook
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this drive to install in my MacBook Pro. I used a program called "SuperDuper" to image my internal drive to the WD Passport, which made a bootable copy of everything on my computer. I then took out the WD drive from the plastic case and installed it in my laptop. After replacing the old drive into the WD USB case, I had a great backup drive (for TimeMachine or whatever) for my system. I highly recommend this drive. Low cost, quiet operation, and < so far > no issues at all. Buy it now!

Digital camera Review: Sleek Design - Great Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

The drive is a great drive. Worked right out of the box with my Windows Vista Laptop.

The hard drive does come with the option to install synchronizing and encrypting software to protect the data you transfer to the drive.

The glossy finish gives the drive a nice touch.

Other great features:

-Very Quiet
-Requires no extra power source, simply use the USB Cable
-Small and lightweight
-Does not get very hot
-Has a flap that covers and protects the drive's USB plug when not in use

The drive is formatted as a FAT32 file system. I converted mine to NTFS because FAT32 cannot support files larger than 4GB (which you might run into if you work with digital video). Formatting the drive is as easy as right-clicking the drive (in Vista) and selecting "Format...". Formatting will erase the data currently on the drive, so make a backup.

Digital camera Review: Nice little package
Summary: 5 Stars

Great little drive, superb for mailing files in a flat rate pack. Good performance

Digital camera Review: My first portable, mass storage device. Works flawlessly!
Summary: 5 Stars

For a while now, I wanted to backup my critical files/data on a device I can keep at another physical location, in case the slim chance of 'an act of God' (or theft) should occur. I've been using 'USB flash drives' and CD-ROM's up until now, but realized they are much more limited and cumbersone, due to the quantity I need. Enter this wondrous, small, portable 'Western Digital' 250GB drive I picked up at 'Costco'. It is truly 'plug and play' with my 6 year old PC (Compaq P3, 1 GHz) running Windows XP, service-pack 2, and required no special software installation on my part. The USB cable works fine. My only slight concern is that in the hour or so of transferring some of my data files to it, the unit got very warm to the touch. As anyone knows, heat is the number one enemy of any electronic device, so in the future, I may just engage in shorter length transfer times, to be safe. I am also seriously contemplating purchasing a Mac 'all in one' desktop later this year, so I am hoping that I can easily transfer my PC files from the 'WD Passport' to the new Mac without any issues. For now, this thing is a godsend, and gives me 'peace of mind'. If it proves reliable over the years, my '5 star rating' will stand.
