Digital camera Review: Overheating Problems

This monitor uses a 12 volt 6 amp power supply encased in a hard plastic solid shell. The size of this power supply is too small for the 72 watts of heat to dissipate properly and the solid shell that encloses it just keeps in the heat. This power supply has a thermal overload shutdown circuit that keeps it from starting fires and that's why the monitor keeps shutting off every few seconds. The power supply used also hasn't been de-rated as all power supplies are intended to be. The current needed by the monitor (6 amps) should be derated to a maximum of 80 percent (with full ventilation) and 60 percent (completely enclosed) which means the power supply is trying to supply 6 amps and it's not capable of providing more than 3.6 amps. The proper size of power supply for this application is one capable of supplying 10 amps sealed up or 7.5 amps with full ventilation. The plug going into the bottom of the monitor is also incapable of handling the full current and the wires are too small in guage.
If you intend to buy this monitor, expect to spend more money to rig up an alternate power supply. It is NOT my suggestion to use lead-acid batteries to provide the power needed, a switching power supply IS required for this application.
The solution to this is to buy a new power supply that's capable of providing the current needed. Mouser Electronics sells a 10 amp 12 volt open frame power supply (a case and cables would be required) for about 60 dollars.
