Digital camera reviews of Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert Periscopes

Digital camera Review: Good for a budget
Summary: 4 Stars

First things first, and everyone already knows this but I want to reiterate it, this detector is not for the aggressive speeder. However, it does work most of the time. I have been saved from 5 traps in Missouri alone, almost all of them being KA. One thing to keep in mind, once the radar even chirps KA, slam the brakes. This radar chirps one KA bar at about 1/2 to 1/4 mile distance from the cop. It's probably not enough to save someone going 20 over, but maybe it will save 5 or 10 over. K band is excellent. K band saved me from a charger interceptor who was firing backwards at traffic. I was alerted almost a mile away, and by 1/2 mile the radar was full blast. I wish the KA was that sensitive, but none the less as long as you know that those KA chirps mean full blast, you will slow down in time.

This detector is very good for the money, but not great. It has no memory so you must program the detector every time you start your car. Still, it only takes a few presses to set it to the mode you want (I run City II). Another nuisance are the LED's on the top which go ballistic to get your attention. One major issue is that they are very visible to other cars, including cops. It is illegal to have any foreign lights on the dash or windshield which illuminate out because you may be perceived to be imitating a cop. I would almost certainly bet that someone with this unit has been pulled over because of the Blue LED lights going berserk near an officer. My advice: I taped over them with some tape, you should probably consider doing the same.

All in all, some quirks, but the results don't lie. 5 possible tickets means over $500 plus the insurance premium. And while I probably wasn't going fast enough to get pulled over on all of them, even 1 ticket (which there was one instance I know I would have been pulled over for sure) would be more than $100 after insurance premiums or lawyers fees to fight it.

I don't speed like a maniac. I just like to get where I am going, and sometimes I drive 5 or 10 over without paying attention. This radar does it's job, and I would purchase it again.

I bought this to replace my Circa 1994 Uniden radar/laser detector.

It works as well, if not better than my old Uniden.

The bright display is highly visable and that can be an issue, especially at night if you don't want to be noticed.

I have not found a way to turn the display off.

The beeping is not as annoying as my old Uniden. I need to retrain my ears and brain to pay attention to this new sound.

If you are looking for something inexpensive that will do the job, this is a great deal.

Had it for a couple of months and am very happy with it. It has regularly picked up police radars long before I spot them, even behind hills (luckily I live in Florida so not many of those to contend with!). The laser detection is fair also. Compared it alongside a V1 and the difference is barely noticeable - the V1 beeps maybe a half second before the XTR did.

Some minor complaints: It gives out TONS of false alarms, especially when I'm driving around town - OK so it's a fun geeky thing to know when I'm half a mile from an automatic door, but still it drives my SO batty when she's in the car! The VG-2 detector appears to give a lot of false alarms (unless Florida law enforcement really do have them scattered every few miles, which I doubt) but it's disabled by default so no big deal. Finally, I would have liked either to see a separate Ka indicator or have it blink on K band detection instead.

Digital camera Review: Good for the price.

This is good for the price. Though sometimes it is difficult to figure out in which mode it is. But I guess I will need to use it for sometime before I can understand it more accurately.

Digital camera Review: Good price, okay detection
Summary: 3 Stars

This detector is great for the price. The only small complaints I have is the fact that it goes off randomly all the time, which isn't that big of a deal, but 90% of the time this detector goes off, its something random, so after a while you stop paying attention to the alerts. It picks cops up from a pretty far distance, but sometimes they sneak up real close before it goes off. The thing is also VERY clunky looking, its flat bottomed, which is kind of weird sitting up in the air on the glass, but whatever. It works, and its cheap, and thats all it needs to be. Sure you could spend 300-500 bucks on a detector, but your not going to be saving yourself any money on speeding tickets then.
