Digital camera reviews of Windows 7 Vista XP Media Center MCE PC Remote Control and Infrared Receiver for Home, Premium and Ultimate EditionDigital camera Review: Great for a media pc and the price Summary: 5 StarsI built a media pc using Windows 7 and Windows Media Center. I wanted to create an appliance that my kids could use to easily browse through our movie, music, and picture collection and watch streaming netflix movies. I have all of our DVD's archived on a hard drive, so we can call up any or our movies from media center. No more losing or scratching DVDs, and it really makes movie watching more enjoyable.
This remote control was the final key to making this a truly "sit back and enjoy" experience. It's cheap, it was easy to install, and it works great. My 8 year old daughter has no problem navigating through the media center and finding her movies. Even more important, is that my wife isn't afraid to use it either.
I was considering going big with a Logitec Harmony remote, but thought I would try this simple one first. I don't feel that I'm missing out on anything, and a more complicated remote might ruin it for the kids/wife. I'm sticking with this guy. Media Center is designed to work with the arrow keys to navigate and find your media. The remote has some shortcuts to movies/music/etc, but I don't find myself needing them much.
If you do need to leave media center (like to go to Pandora), the "close" button on the remote is really nice. The mouse pad on the remote works better than some other types of remote mice I've tried before. If you take a little time to add buttons to your browser's link bar, you'll be able to easily go to Pandora or whatever sites you frequent. I don't have a keyboard hooked up to this PC. Media Center has a built in on-screen keyboard that works well with the remote. Occasionally, I do miss the keyboard, but I created a shortcut to the windows-based on-screen keyboard for the occasional time that I need it. If I have to perform any maintenance, I use a remote access tool like VNC or Logmein. (btw, I rip my DVDs on my laptop and transfer the movies over the network in my house. I guess you could do it all on the media pc, but then you'd be taking away from watching time, and you'd really want a full keyboard and mouse)
If you are playing around with a living room pc, you can't go wrong with this remote for under $20 :)
