Some things just work. This is one of those things. At first glance it appears to be a relatively simple color checker and white balance card. Useful but there are others available for less money. What makes this so useful is the software. It's brilliant.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom users will appreciate the seamless integration. Take some photos of this color checker and then start LR. Export to the ColorChecker Passport and let it run in the background. You do need to reload LR but the profiles are automatically available for each camera.
I also tried this with an infrared converted dSLR. This camera has its IR cut filter replaced with a 720nm IR pass filter. While the color pattern detection doesn't work too well with near IR cameras, the white balance and creative enhancement targets do work. Before I used to set the white balance using the lawn but this is much simpler and more consistent. Just reading the color temperature and tint from the warming and cooling patches is quite helpful and the eight exposure patches help avoid under or over-exposures.
How about film camera users? I also took some photos with a film SLR and then scanned the negatives. The utility is also limited to white balance and the creative enhancement targets since scanning to JPEGs clips too much color data. X-Rite does provide both RAW and JPEG workflows in their documentation.
The documentation is excellent and well worth reading. I thought the included strap was too long but after reading the manual I found that it was meant to be worn across the shoulder; for this, it is the correct length. They also explain about color management and provide more details about each target.
