At its core the practice of law, my profession, is black and white with an infinite number of shades of gray. Ours is a verbal profession and our use of the written word is usually limited to correspondence, pleadings and briefs. However persuasion is the predominant goal of our craft, and lawyers increasingly are using color to enhance their efforts.

That is why for a long time I have been looking for a color laser printer.

The first question that arises is, "why not use an inkjet? " The answer is that inkjet printers produce copies that look like they were made on, well, an inkjet. No lawyer could imagine sending opposing counsel documents that will easily smear. Crisp images and tight typefaces are natural offspring of color lasers. As result the work product always appears professionally set.

This Xerox machine draws on the engineering and design acumen of Tektronix which produced some of the finest high-end printers and laser printers of its day. Xerox may not have needed the acquisition of Tektronix given its own engineering history, but it certainly did not hurt. The result is a low cost color laser printer with a price tag even a small law office can embrace.

The printer is networkable either with an Ethernet or USB connection, and it is Mac as well as PC compatible. I have made it wireless (sort of) by connecting it to my Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Gigabit) MB053LL/A using a USB cable.

The output seems a bit slower than its rated 16 ppm (B & W) and 12 ppm (color), but this may be a result of my USB and wireless configuration. The quality of the output is superb however.

This is definitely as Best Buy for those in search of an affordable color laser printer.

Digital camera Review: Excellent Print Quality!

This printer doesn't support automatic duplex printing, but you can achieve duplex printing manually. Also, the quality of photo prints isn't great, but is very acceptable. In fact, right now, there are no color laser printers in the sub $1,000 dollar price range that can produce ink jet quality photo prints. However, color lasers do everything else very well. The Xerox Phaser 6130 Color laser produces excellent text and great graphical illustrations. In addition, the printer weighs only 38 lbs. It has native networking (10/100 Mb), which is convenient because you can put the printer anywhere there is a network port in your house. You can also connect a wireless adapter to it as an option. I chose to connect the printer to a wall port. The printer awakes from sleep automatically when a job arrives, and starts printing within about 20 to 30 seconds. I upgraded my printer's memory by ordering a Kingston - Memory - 1 GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - DDR2 - 533 MHz / PC2-4200 chip. Installation was easy. Xerox also has an excellent support site for all of its printers. I also got this printer for $259.99 + $38.00 shipping from The Factory Depot by way of Amazon. That was a great price. I use this printer in my home. If you are a business, you may want to look at the Xerox 6180 DN, which supports automatic duplexing and networking in addition to other special features. The 6130 supports Adobe Postscript Level 3 and PCL 6 emulations. The printer also supports the Pantone standard in addition to a number of networking protocols -- most native -- some optional. Overall, I love this printer. It produces book quality text for about 15 cents per page. If you want to learn more about the 6130, [...]

Digital camera Review: Excellent printer.
Summary: 4 Stars

So far, I am very pleased with this printer. However, when I first got it, I wasn't very happy.

As soon as I started printing, I noticed something was a little bit off. The magenta was a little bit off and not correctly aligning. I ran both the automatic and manual alignment tools from the printer, but neither fixed the problem. It was getting a bit annoying as it had made the printouts look very inferior compared to my HP 2600n. I looked on support forums to find a solution but couldn't find one. I then decided to call Xerox tech support and they were actually very helpful. Fortunately, I had registered the printer when I bought it and that made the phone support experience smooth. They had asked about the fuser and how old it was, which I told them was brand new and only used for a few days. They quickly shipped out a new fuser to me and that fixed the problem. Since then, I've been happy with it. Works great as a post-script and PCL printer. Also, I was able to stick a 1 GB stick of laptop memory I had laying around and it recognized it. Saved me money from not having to buy the expensive one from Xerox.

Also, the initial toner cartridges that come with it feel very light, almost as if they're empty but it's been lasting a long time. I think it's because I'm used to having a cartridge that has the toner in the same package as the drum, which the 6130 separates. In the 6130, the drums are part of the fuser assembly.

My wife uses this printer a lot for printing out text for school and I've used it to print photos and text. It prints photos very well on photo paper. I am very pleased with the printer, especially for the price. The toner prices are cheaper than others, probably because it doesn't include the drum assembly as I mentioned.

Digital camera Review: Fantastic Printer

Bought this as a replacement for my Samsung CLP300N, which was a little over a year old and continuously failed. This one plugged in and worked!

Works great with Mac OS X and Linux (haven't tried Windows).

Well recommended printer.

Digital camera Review: Fast, solidly built and quiet, what else could you ask for?

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I received this printer earlier today. It is now set up and running. I was surprised how effortless set up was. We are using Mac 10.5.4.

It comes with an instruction sheet that shows you how to remove the tapes over the toner cartridges and other packing materials. All you have to do is turn a few knobs and pull a metal piece forward, then pull out 8 yellow plastic tapes. Then you put the metal piece back and lock the knobs again. You take off a few pieces of tape, seat the toner cartridges in place (they only need to be moved forward slightly) and then you can plug it in. I connected the printer to my wireless router with an ethernet cable but you can also use a USB connection.

Then you use the installation cd and run the install program. This runs effortlessly, all you need to do is agree to the licensing agreement.

I wasn't totally sure how to set up the printer to print wireless. I'd never done that before. I tried a few things involving the printers IP addresses without success. I didn't realize I was making things far more complicated than they needed to be. Finally I just tried to print a document. I selected "Add printer" and the software loaded the drivers. That was all it took to add the printer. Now when printing I just select this printer and it prints. It is no different than using any other printer.

You can change options using the menu on the printer. I changed the waiting time till sleeping from 30 minutes to 5 minutes The default on this printer is to print an information page every time it is turned on. This was easily turned off. Everything else seems fine as it is.

I've printed documents in color and black and white, labels and a few photos. I wouldn't print photographs on this printer but it does a good job with documents that have photos.

Someone else mentioned the lights dimming when they used the printer. I haven't had that problem at all.

I am pleased with this printer. It is sturdy, with a lot of metal and is solidly built. I look forward to using it in my home business. My housemate teaches at a high school and they use the same printer in their computer lab. It has been very reliable even under a much more intense use. They change toner cartridges 3 - 4 times a year, which isn't bad given many students printing documents all day every day.

Edited to add - I've had trouble with Firefox crashing when I print. This is a known issue with Firefox NOT anything regarding this printer but while investigating it I added a RAM disc to this printer. This printer comes with 128 MB of RAM in it. You can add to the physical memory in the printer but what I did was add a RAM disc. This dedicates memory on the hard drive so the document you're printing is written to the hard drive and then prints. This has greatly improved the Firefox problem (which I think is a Firefox issue) and speeded printing. So I would recommend that you add a RAM disc. Open the printer info, select "info" and then driver. Check the check box for RAM disc.
