Digital camera Review: At least I got one defective

I recently bought this unit on Amazon on August 2007. My unit was completely defective. When I turned on the wireless switch on my router, it did not respond even if i make a ping and the WLAN and WAN leds do not turn on. I have no connectivity to it at all. I kept reading such wonderful reviews about this router that I had to buy it. I really needed to set up a wireless network in my home because I wanted to put my computer in my bedroom. Which incidently is on the opposite side of the house of where the modem is located at. Considering there is a large bedroom, a bathroom, 2 closets, and a hall between the area where the router would be at and my room, I was having doubts about any router being able to handle that many walls. All I can say is that this product totally blew my mind. I thought that I would probably get a "good" signal at best or maybe even end up with a dead spot, but low and behold... I have an "Excellent" signal about 80% of the time and a "very good" the other 20%. I can download music and do all I normally did and best of all I haven't lost connection once. Besides that, I am not the most computer savy person, but the instructions were so easy to follow I had no problems setting everything up. It took me about 15 min. max... including setting up security. If you want a router that really works, that is easy to set up, and that you won't have to worry about, buy this one you won't be sorry.Digital camera Review: Belkin, Linksys, And Everyone Be Afraid.

I had a Belkin PRE-N with MIMO and it worked pretty good. The range was good but it kept messing the setting up for XBOX Live. My Roommate and I both have LIVE and we couldn't join each others game and the NAT settings kept getting set to Strict, even after we did portforwarding and putting one of the 360's outta the DMZ. Nothing to seemed to hold. Since we've gotten the Zyxel, it's been like a whole new LIVE. Both 360's have NAT set to Open, all the time and we're getting great connections. He's on the Wireless about 4 rooms away and I'm hardwired to it. Just perfect. For you people who are done with the hassle of Belkin or Linksys with the stupid portforwarding, get this router and be happy. I have owned this router for about 8 months now. Past routers consisted of 3 different Netgear models and a Dlink. This router blows all of those away. It is highly configurable and the mimo gives it incredible range. I have over 4000 square feet in my house on 3 levels and it covers all of it with no problems even though the router is located in the basement. I can still get a good to excellent signal 2 floors above!! The router is also very stable and has not required any rebooting to maintain connections. I frequently access my home network remotely (VNC and Slingbox) while traveling and have never had a router related issue prevent me from doing that.
It is important to mention that this router model has been plagued with a power supply issue and mine fell victim as well. Apparently, the power supply shipped with quite a few units degrades over time and eventually cannot supply enough current to the router causing it to randomly reset. Zyxel has a web page form at http://us.zyxel.com/replacement/. Fill it out and they will send you a new power supply. Mine arrived via 2 day Fedex. No problem getting somebody at Zyxel on the phone either. Great customer service! Even with this issue I would highly recommend this router.

As others have mentioned, I tried several models of Linksys and D-link routers with limited success. The major problem with all of those routers (especially Linksys) was a lack of consistent connectivity that became progressively worse over time. I am a consultant that frequently works over VPN, so when the wireless connection drops all of my client applications would crash and loose data. This problem became so frequent with the Linksys routers that I no longer trusted the wireless connections and always plugged into hard-wired ethernet. The Linksys routers frequently required hard reboots (power on/off) to correct the broken connections.
I purchased my first Zyxel X-550 eight months ago and have NEVER lost a wireless connection. This router worked so well that I bought a second two months ago for my remote office location. Today I just ordered a third for my 73 year old mother-in-law.
I can virtually guarantee that there is no better wireless router out there for the money and I hope that you enjoy yours as much as we have.
