I looked at other laptop stands NOT made by Rain Design and felt they looked ugly and saw issues with laptops sliding off of them over extended periods of time. Considering how much my MBP cost, I'm not taking the chance. While I do use my laptop for travel and in various areas, the majority of the time it is at rest on my desk. This stand gets it up an a better eye level for siting that I have noticed less slouching. The metal lip at the bottom front holds the laptop and will prevent it from sliding off- the lip comes up to the height of your MBP when the top is open, so if you ever want to reach up to use the trackpad, you will hardly feel it. The open hole in the back, akin to the iMac's built-in stand, seemed silly at first but I certainly helps de-clutter desk space and hold the cords when they are disconnected.
