Digital camera Review: Changed my mind - doesn't work so great.....
Summary: 5 Stars

Update 04/21/2009: Well if Amazon allowed me to decrease my 5 star rating to a 2 or 3 star I would. Magic Jack has become very unreliable. Works about 25% of the time. I wish I could say this makes a great second phone line but.... Calls to and from cell phones are nonexistent. I have cable internet with 15 mbps download so I don't think I can blame my ISP. I'm wondering if the poor service is related to the number of sales/users of Magic Jack. I'm not a techy so I'm just speculating. Anyways I've called my cable/phone company and I'm having a second line installed (again). A second line is $15 a month which includes long distance, etc. Bummer is I have to pay the $35 installation fee (again). I guess it's true, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is." I think I paid a total of $130 to Magic Jack for 5 years of service so I'm stuck with it. Who knows maybe service will improve in time.

I work from home and I am at my computer all day long. I had a second phone line for work and my company discontinued reimbursing for telecommunication and internet expenses. Like everyone else in the country I am looking for ways to reduce monthly household expenses. MagicJack seemed like a good place to start.

Very quickly I was able to figure out how to install MagicJack and make it work with my 2-line phone and my 3 cordless Uniden DECT phones. After making some test calls to family and friends to make sure quality was acceptable I called my phone company (cable broadband phone service) and I cancelled my second line. That will save me about $18.00 per month (that is with an estimate of $1.80 per month for MagicJack over a 5 year period). The big savings will come if/when I migrate my primary home number to MagicJack but I can't do that until it is available in Montana (Area Code 406).

Pros:
-Easy to Install
-Love the software and contact feature
-Love how voicemail works and voicemail to email feature
-Low monthly expense
-Software includes a Mute and Hold option. I haven't used these yet.
-Software includes a Do Not Disturb feater. I haven't tried this yet.

Cons:
-Periodically people say my voice is soft, this is infrequent
-With Cordless it seems I have to set in cradle before making another call. I don't think this happens 100% of the time. Needs more testing.

Next Steps:
-Headset:I have order a headset that should work with MagicJack and my desktop computer.
-Laptops: Install and use this same MagicJack on our other computers

Headset Update:
-Inexpensive headset arrived from Plantronics ($13). It would have been easy to install if I had used some common sense. I was trying to plug into the back of my desktop and and had to consider speakers and crawling around on the floor and wires, etc., etc, etc. Well then I remembered the jacks on the front of the desktop (duh)! Plugged into those and it worked great (had to un-mute my microphone in Control Panel Sound Settings). Next 'head-scratcher'... Do I have to plug and unplug headset to switch to speakers??? Almost ordered the $8.86 Plantronics switch but ran across a review that suggested an alternative and it works great and it was free!!!! I had one of those headphone splitters that you can use to share iPod/MP3 sound that I never use. Just take that and plug it into your PC Headphone Jack then plug headset headphones into one side and speakers into the other side and magically they both work simultaneously.

Digital camera Review: Cost next to nothing and that's what it's worth.

Returned it in the 30 day period and got my money back. Tried on 3 different computers. The installation caused issues on all 3 requiring frequent reboots. Some calls required multiple attempts to place and restarts of the software. Many incoming calls went to their buggy voice mail and never range locally. Calls that did go through had frequent drop outs so people I was calling couldn't follow a conversation. Skype is 100 times more reliable.

Digital camera Review: Do not buy MajicJack
Summary: 1 Stars

This is not worth the money. I have had one problem after another and I have had it for approximately 3 months. I can't always hear people, people's voices break up when they are talking, it doesn't always ring like it supposed to, the voicemail doesn't always work, and just recently people have gotten a message saying the "number is disconnected" when they call. It is not a problem with the phone I am using either, because the phone worked fine when I was not using it with MJ. Also, don't let thecute add with the little girl and the puppy dogs lead you to believe that is some family company who cares about customers - the customer service is obviously outsourced, it's really hard to get a hold of anyone, and they don't know what the problem once you finally get a hold of someone. Save yourself the hassle and the wasted money and DO NOT BUY a MAJICJACK.

Digital camera Review: Don't Get Jacked!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this thing about two months ago, and as soon as I attached it to my two-year-old Compaq computer, the computer started to freezing. A computer tech took a look at the computer and said that it had a motherboard about to go out, so I bought a new one (not from the tech). Once again, the computer started freezing when the magic jack was attached (and, by the way, the computer has to be up and running or the magic jack phone is inoperable). I upgraded memory, video card, etc., and still freezing. So, I finally decided to disconnect the magic jack, and voila, no more freezing. Magic jack will not replace or refund, and tech support is wothless. So after weeks of trouble, expense, lost time, and frustration, the jack is junked. Don't take a chance on this solid piece of crap. No amount of money saved can make dealing with this junk or the people behind it (if you can find any real people there) worth it. Again, don't take a chance on this product!!!

Digital camera Review: Don't buy it
Summary: 1 Stars

The device itself is rather interesting, but it rarely works. The software requires your computer always to be turned on and left logged on, instead of running as a service. The biggest problem though is the sound quality. It sounds much worse than a cell phone with lots of crackling and it often hangs you up. Also, if you chat with tech support they just read through the knowledge base, which you most likely already did, and their ability to write English is terrible. It may be a cheap phone bill but you're better off just not having a phone if you want to save money.
